Windows protect our homes from the elements, including rain, snow and pollen. When properly installed and maintained, they help insulate your house to keep the family comfortable year-round. If your home’s windows are old, drafty or have damaged frames, it may be time for replacements.
While spring is the optimal time for window installation in New England what are the advantages of getting new windows in the early fall?
Flexible Install Dates
Warm weather is the ideal time to make exterior home improvements, as you typically don’t need to worry about wet weather or cold temperatures. Yet if your home is drafty or has mold growth from excess moisture, you need to replace the windows sooner than later.
In the weeks leading up to the start of autumn, window installers will likely have a more flexible schedule to work around your own. Once Labor Day comes and goes, kids are back to school and summer has unofficially ended. You will likely be able to book an appointment without having to wait several weeks.
Mild Outdoor Temperatures
When fall rolls around, temperatures cool off but it’s not sweater weather quite yet! September and October can have the perfect temperatures for window installation; you won’t mind a draft when you already have the windows open day-to-day!
Caulk, the sealant that helps prevent window leaks and drafts, responds best between 40 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Below or above these temperatures, it will not dry properly and could prematurely crack. Also keep in mind that silicone-based caulk can adhere better in cold temperatures than latex-based caulk, if your installation happens in late fall.
While there have been balmy autumns in New England, we’ve also had surprise snowstorms so be sure to keep an eye on the weather forecast before scheduling window installation.
Preparation for Winter
When poorly performing windows cause the HVAC bill to skyrocket, the last thing you want to do is put off installation until spring. With bitter cold winter on its way, fall could be your only choice for window replacement. Before the holidays arrive, any home improvements you can make to save on living costs, the better!
