After years of wear and tear, between strong winds and heavy rains, there will likely come a time to replace your home’s windows. Our home improvement experts can not only install new construction or replacement windows, but can help you decide which styles work best for your home. What choices do homeowners have?
Bay & Bow Windows
Also known as garden windows, bay and bow windows are large with multiple frames. What’s the difference? While bay windows are rounded at 30 or 45-degree angles, bow windows are typically bigger with more openings and a 10-degree rounded projection.
Bay and bow windows work best in rooms you want to appear more spacious. They add light and a large viewing area of the outside. Their dramatic style would be perfect for a breakfast nook or room addition overlooking the backyard.
Casement Windows
Casement windows are side-hinged and open away from the home at a 90-degree angle to the left or right. Operated by crank, they are a more traditional style of window found in older homes. However, casements are easy to clean and work efficiently on windy days.
If you’re thinking about installing casement windows, they are commonly seen above kitchen sinks, where it is easier to crank than push up at a higher level.
Double Hung Windows
The most popular style available, double hung windows lift open while remaining flush to the wall. These traditional windows are easy to operate, but need to be closed tight to prevent cold air from sneaking inside the home during colder months.
Ideal for patios, decks and walkways, double hung windows do not require additional space when opened. Areas that see a lot of foot traffic benefit most from these sliding windows.
Picture Windows
Much like bay and bow windows, picture windows expose your home to the great outdoors. However, these windows do not open or have multiple frames that wrap around a house.
Think of these as display rather than functional windows. If there is a room in your home that needs more light but not airflow, a picture window could work well.
Rolling Windows
Easy-to-operate rolling windows slide open to the left or right. Great for modern homes, rolling windows are convenient and durable. They are also popular for older people who live on their own and may have restricted movement. Harvey Building Products recommends rolling windows be installed in family rooms, new additions and on porches.
